Robert E. McCue, 96, of Sumner and formerly of Davenport, died Sunday, April 27, 2014, at the Hillcrest Home in Sumner.
Funeral Mass will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 1, 2014, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner with Rev. James Brokman officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Sumner. Friends may call for one hour preceding services at the church on Thursday. Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner is assisting the family. Memorials may be given in his name to Cedar Valley Hospice, the Hillcrest Home in Sumner, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
Robert Earl, son of John and Mary Keegan McCue, was born June 3, 1917, in Fremont Township of rural Fayette County, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith. He attended rural school and graduated from Sumner High School in 1934. He received normal training and began teaching prior to age eighteen. He taught rural schools in Fayette and Bremer Counties. From 1941 to 1945, Bob served with the U.S. Army. He received his Masters in Education and taught in Deep River and Parkersburg, and later served as principal at Hoover and Washington Elementary Schools in Davenport. After retiring from the school system, he served two terms on the Davenport School Board, one term as president, and was very active in the Davenport School Museum. He was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church and was active in Kiwanis.
Bob is survived by one sister, Elaine Gitch of Sumner; special friends, Jocelyn Wiley of Phoenix, Arizona and Jason Wiley of Las Vegas, Nevada; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Edward, Donald, Willard “Bill”, and Tom; and two sisters, Joanne Davenport and Jeanne Dier.
