Robert E. McCue

Robert E. McCue, 96, of Sumner and formerly of Davenport, died Sunday, April 27, 2014, at the Hillcrest Home in Sumner.

Funeral Mass will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday, May 1, 2014, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Sumner with Rev. James Brokman officiating. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Sumner. Friends may call for one hour preceding services at the church on Thursday. Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner is assisting the family. Memorials may be given in his name to Cedar Valley Hospice, the Hillcrest Home in Sumner, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Robert Earl, son of John and Mary Keegan McCue, was born June 3, 1917, in Fremont Township of rural Fayette County, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith. He attended rural school and graduated from Sumner High School in 1934. He received normal training and began teaching prior to age eighteen. He taught rural schools in Fayette and Bremer Counties. From 1941 to 1945, Bob served with the U.S. Army. He received his Masters in Education and taught in Deep River and Parkersburg, and later served as principal at Hoover and Washington Elementary Schools in Davenport. After retiring from the school system, he served two terms on the Davenport School Board, one term as president, and was very active in the Davenport School Museum. He was a lifelong member of the Catholic Church and was active in Kiwanis.

Bob is survived by one sister, Elaine Gitch of Sumner; special friends, Jocelyn Wiley of Phoenix, Arizona and Jason Wiley of Las Vegas, Nevada; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Edward, Donald, Willard “Bill”, and Tom; and two sisters, Joanne Davenport and Jeanne Dier.

I met Mr. McCue when I started teaching at Hoover Elementary. After I retired I worked with him at the Davenport School Museum which he dearly loved. We miss him, but his work is still on display and used. It was fun knowing him as a coworker after having him for a boss!

Mr.McCue was my English teacher in Parkersburg,Iowa.

I will never forget Mr.McCue.

He was patient,and kind,I always wondered where he was and if he was still involved in education. I still remember everything he taught me about English. To me, it is obvious that correct English is no longer a priority in school.I often wondered what he would say about the awful grammar that is used these days.

He inspired me to become a teacher.I taught for 40 years and English was one of my favorite classes.I taught elementary children I am still teaching CCD classes on Wednesday evenings.

Thank you Mr.McCue for all you have done to help so many students.

Mr. McCue and our family go way back. He was my brothers and my principal from Washington Elementary School... Thru out the years we had a few people pass away and Mr. McCue was there to give condolences. We just were in awe that he remembered us. We didn't think he would remember who we were but I had been a custodian for Davenport Schools a while back and had seen him. I approached him and asked if he remembered the "Tedfords." His reaction was,"how could I ever forget you guys." I just laughed. We had some rough times back then but he was always there for support as well as the teachers at Washington. Mr. McCue will always be someone that I will always remember. My brother and I were just reminiscing about back in the day. He will be greatly missed by many. He was an excellent person and always someone whom I had thought of thru the years. May he rest in peace. My condolences to the family. You will always be in my thoughts and prayers. And believe me I will always reminisce about those days.

Words cannot express the loss I am feeling right now - I went through Hoover and Washington Elementary schools in Davenport with Mr. McCue as my principal. Deepest respect for him. We were all saddened when we lost Mike Wiley - another truly sad day with this passing as well.

My family would like to express our deepest sympathies to the family of Mr. McCue. We were the Williams family - Mr. McCue would come over on Sundays for dinner sometimes (as did Mr. Wiley)....the memories just keep coming...

Our best to all those as we all remember our younger days. Although you have gone on to better things, you will truly be missed here.
